The Android app builder for native apps on Google Play
Design your app in your browser. GoodBarber compiles it in Kotlin as a native Android app, not a web app in a shell, and you publish it under your own Google Play account.
Made for publishers, communities and small businesses: no code, no development team. On the Premium plan, the same project also gives you the iOS app and a web version. GoodBarber apps add up to more than 25,000 downloads a day, Google Play and the App Store combined.
- Native, compiled in Kotlin
- On Google Play, under your own account
- Push notifications included
- New content live, no new review
- The native build, compiled online
- Hosting, back office and push delivery
- A test app you can share before release
- The engine, kept current with each Android release
Three ways to get an Android app
Coding gives you full control. Wrapping a website is quick to ship. GoodBarber gives you a native app without a development team. Each is a fair choice; here is what changes.
| What matters | GoodBarber | Code it yourself | Wrap a website (WebView) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Skills and team | No code: you design in your browser | Android developers, plus someone for the server | A website that already works well on phones |
| Time to a first version | Set by your content; each build takes 15 minutes to a few hours | A full project: design, code, tests | Quick, if your mobile site is ready |
| Google Play review | Guided steps, or our team submits for you | Your team prepares, submits and answers Google | The same review; you prepare and submit |
| New Android versions | GoodBarber adapts the engine; you publish an update | Your developers adapt and retest the code | Depends on the wrapper tool |
| Cost of the whole stack | One subscription: hosting, back office and push included | Developers, plus hosting, a database, push and upkeep | The tool, plus your website and its hosting |
| Design | A design system and 100+ pre-built layouts | Anything your team can design and build | Your mobile website, in an app frame |
From idea to Google Play, in four steps
Design it in your browser
Start from 100+ pre-built layouts, then set your colors, fonts and icons in the back office, from any computer with a browser.
Install the free My GoodBarber app from Google Play: it shows your changes on your Android phone while you build.
Fill it with content and features
Add sections for articles, videos, podcasts, events or maps, and fill them with the built-in CMS, or connect an RSS feed or a YouTube channel.
Push notifications are included. What you publish shows up in the app automatically, with no new Google review; a new feature needs a new version.
Test it on your Android phone
With your Google Play developer account set up, GoodBarber builds a test version of your app: an exact copy of the one Google Play will get. You install it on your phone from a link.
Share that link with your team or your client. It is where you check push notifications and social login before release.
Publish on Google Play
Upload the Android App Bundle that GoodBarber generates to Google Play Console, add your store listing and send it for review. Google's review usually takes a few days, sometimes a week or more; a new personal account first runs Google's 14-day closed test.
On your own, a step-by-step guide takes you through Google's consoles, from the first build to the submission. Or our optional publishing service does that setup and submits the app for you, on your account.
Who does what, from build to Google Play
GoodBarber handles
- The Android App Bundle (AAB) that Google Play requires
- A step-by-step guide through Google's consoles
- Help from our support team if Google rejects the app
- Adapting the platform to each new Android version
- Optional: our team does the setup, submits and handles rejections with you
You handle
- Your own Google Play developer account: 25 USD, once, paid to Google
- For a new personal account, Google's closed test: at least 12 testers for 14 days, then the request for production
- Your store listing: texts and screenshots
- Documents Google may ask for, and changes to your content
- Publishing updates a few times a year, to ship engine improvements
It depends on the tool: some load a website inside the app, others compile a native app. GoodBarber generates native binaries compiled in Swift and Kotlin: not a web app in a shell. Your Android app is compiled in Kotlin and installs from Google Play like any other app; the native technology page explains how it works.
No. You design the app in your browser without code, GoodBarber builds it online, and you submit it in Google Play Console: any computer with a browser is enough, plus an Android phone to test the app. The one-time setup in Google's consoles follows a step-by-step guide, or GoodBarber's publishing service does it for you. A Mac comes into play for the iOS version, if you upload it to Apple yourself.
Yes. A GoodBarber Android app is built and published with your own Google Play developer account, even if GoodBarber's publishing team submits it for you, so the app and its users stay yours. The fee is 25 USD, once, paid to Google and not to GoodBarber, and Google verifies your identity. Choose the account type carefully, since it cannot be changed later: Personal for an individual, Organization for a company, which needs a D-U-N-S number.
Google's review usually takes a few days, sometimes a week or more for a new app. With a personal developer account created after November 13, 2023, Google first requires a closed test with at least 12 testers for 14 days in a row before you can apply for production; an Organization account skips this step. If Google rejects the app, GoodBarber's support team helps you with its message; with the optional publishing service, the team handles the rejection with you and resubmits.
Yes, at two stages. While you build, the free My GoodBarber app previews your changes on your Android phone. Once the app is generated, you install the test version, an exact copy of the app Google Play will get, from a link you can share with your team or a client; it is where you test push notifications and social login. Android may show a Play Protect warning for this test install: choose Install anyway.
Yes, to sell access to your content. With GoodBarber's Memberships extension, users take a monthly or yearly subscription through Google Play to unlock your premium content, and you can remove ads for subscribers. Google takes its service fee on each subscription; GoodBarber takes no commission. The extension is paid on the Premium plan and included in the Pro plan, for Content apps: it sells content, not physical products, bookings or classes.
Native Android and iOS apps start at GoodBarber's Premium plan, which also includes the web version, hosting, the back office and push notifications; every plan is on the pricing page. Add 25 USD, once, paid to Google for your developer account. GoodBarber's publishing service is optional and paid per publication. You start with a 30-day free trial, no credit card, and subscribe when you are ready to publish.
